Midgard

Midgard is planet earth, the world that we live in. There is no need to study the sources in order to learn about it and to reconnect with it. All that one has to do in order to learn about Midgard is to open the front door and leave the building with an open mind. It is a common trend amongst students and practitioners of Runes and Norse Mythology to invest a lot of time in order to learn about the other eight worlds and their inhabitants, oftentimes forgetting that the center of the whole cosmos is actually Midgard.

Humanity has spent most of recorded history trying to “overcome” this world, to be free from its cycles and unforgiving nature. By now we have mostly succeeded in this task but the price for that has turned out to be much higher than anticipated. We have lost the connection to our home, the planet that allowed us to come into existence in the first place. We are so shut off from nature that we have even lost our bond to our fellow inhabitants aside from a few species that we have “optimized” until they perfectly fit our needs and wishes. This alienation from Midgard and its inhabitants has led us to lose our connection to ourselves and the consequences of this are social isolation, animal cruelty, loss of spirituality and the continuous destruction of our planet in order to maximize profit, just to name a few.

In order to oppose and reverse that trend the reconnection with Midgard is just as important as the work in order to regain access to the other eight worlds. There are many ways to do that but the most important thing is to simply go out and experience nature as much as possible. The natural world has its own rules and they do not change according to popular ethics and morals, so the first thing to do is to get rid of our idea of how we would like it to be and start to see how it actually is.
